Alex Trebek hurt after chasing burglar

The Associated Press

Posted: Jul 27, 2011 8:00 PM ET
"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek says he snapped his Achilles tendon while running after a burglar who had stolen cash, a bracelet and other items from his San Francisco hotel room.

Trebek tells KGO-TV that he also injured his other leg while falling down during the chase early Wednesday. He was on crutches later Wednesday while serving as host of the National Geographic World Championship at Google headquarters in Mountain View.

San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield says 56-year-old old Lucinda Moyers was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and receiving stolen property. The cash and bracelet haven't been found but other items were recovered.

Trebek is scheduled for surgery on Friday and is expected to be in a cast for six weeks.

Fresh out of the "You couldn't make this shit up" department...
A bizarre bug that looks like a rolled-up gym sock with a red, cartoonish face has an equally unusual sex life. Scientists recently discovered that the insect called the cottony cushion scale isn’t hermaphroditic – it's incestuous.

Entomologists previously believed that the cottony cushion scale (Icerya purchase) was able to fertilize its eggs without a male mate because it was a hermaphrodite, an organism that possesses the reproductive organs of both sexes.

However, researchers from Oxford University have found that the species' females fertilize their own eggs in a completely different and strange way.

"It turns out that females are not really fertilizing their eggs themselves, but instead are having this done by a parasitic tissue that infects them at birth," study researcher Laura Ross said. "It seems that this infectious tissue derives from leftover sperm from their father, who has found a sneaky way of having more children by mating with his daughters."

What the little hillbilly insects look like:

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/bruins/post/_/id/7320/lucics-plans-with-cup-reportedly-disrupted

As if we needed another reason to despise Canucks fans.
Lucic's plans with Cup reportedly disrupted

By James Murphy

Apparently some people in Vancouver still can’t get over the Canucks' loss to the Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals. Milan Lucic is set to have his day with the Stanley Cup in his native Vancouver and according to his mother Snezana, Lucic plans to keep his celebration low key and private due to some recent incidents.

"There is a certain amount of tension right now," Lucic's mom, told the Vancouver Courier. "It's not all of Vancouver, just certain individuals."

According to the article in the Courier, a photo of Lucic in his Bruins uniform at a local hockey rink was vandalized, and last month when Lucic attended a local Greek Festival, a fight broke out in the crowd around him. Plans to bring the Stanley Cup to Kitsilano Beach Park for the sports festival, Kits Fest, have reportedly been scratched and Lucic plans to keep his celebrations with the Cup more private.

This is not the first time the Lucic family has felt the ire of Canucks fans. During Game 1 of the finals, Lucic’s grandparents were harassed at Rogers Arena.

“It’s funny they say that,” Lucic said defending Boston fans at the time. “Because I remember after Game 1, people in Vancouver throwing popcorn and peanuts at my grandparents. That’s almost as low as it gets as that goes. They’re my grandparents. They’re in their 60s. If there is anyone you should show respect to, it’s them."
Dumb ass American!!

http://wishididntknow.com/2011/08/12/ski-champion-booted-from-us-team-for-peeing-on-11-year-old/
The career of a talented ski champ has gone downhill as he was identified as the JetBlue passenger accused of peeing on a child mid-flight.

Robert ‘Sandy’ Vietze had refused to apologize after the incident, where he allegedly unzipped and relieved himself on the 11-year-old girl.

In a statement Friday, U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Executive Vice President of Athletics Luke Bodensteiner said Mr Vietze has been dismissed from the team for conduct violations.

Mr Vietze, 18, of South Warren, Vermont, reportedly told authorities: ‘I was drunk, and I did not realize I was p*****g on her leg,’

He was gunning for a chance to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, but his mid-flight ‘accident’ has cost him.

He was returning to Vermont after a week-long training with the U.S. Ski team at Oregon’s Mount Hood.

Multiple calls to Vietze’s family home in Warren were not answered Friday.

His mother, Abigail, told the New York Post: ‘We have no comment, nothing to say.’

Despite an earlier report from Port Authority police that the case was dropped, federal prosecutors say Mr Vietze will be prosecuted.

Robert Nardoza, spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn, New York, said Mr Vietze was charged with indecent exposure, a misdemeanour, and faces up to one year in prison.

He was slapped with a summons to appear in court at a later date.

The incident on Wednesday shocked the girl’s family, and flight attendants had to separate Mr Vietze and the girl’s irate father, a cancer patient.

The girl’s father was reportedly using the toilet at the time, but returned to find Veitze midstream.

One witness said: ‘I woke up to this man yelling and literally looking like he was about to punch this kid in the face.’

‘The father was screaming, “F**k that kid! I don’t want him near my family!”‘ as flight attendants attempted to separate the pair.

The drunk teen was then removed to the back of the plane and attendants scurried to clean up the little girl.

As tensions rose aboard the flight, another passenger, complaining of chest-pains, began to vomit, prompting the pilot to ask: ‘Is anybody on this flight a nurse or a doctor?’

The crew then cleaned up his mess as well.

‘The pilots kept coming out of the cockpit to talk to the flight crew about what was going on,’ the witness told the Post.

‘When we landed, the pilot warned us that police were coming.’

Six Port Authority police officers met the plane as it landed in Kennedy Airport at 6:30 a.m – two for the sick passenger and four to escort Mr Vietze into custody.

When MailOnline contacted JetBlue they said only that an ‘incident was reported on Flight 166′ and would not say whether the little girl and her family would receive compensation or a free flight for their troubles.

Mr Vietze recently graduated from the Green Mountain Valley School, a top ski academy in Vermont.
Roller derby August 18, 2011

Gloria Er-Chua

A roller-coaster being built at Canada's Wonderland will be vying for a coveted title in the race to build the world's tallest, fastest and steepest thrill rides.

The Leviathan, which will stand 93.3 metres and accelerate up to 148 km/h when completed, is set to debut next May.

The 139-metre Kingda Ka at Six Flags theme park in New Jersey currently holds the title as the world's tallest coaster. Fastest belongs to the Formula Rossa in Abu Dhabi, which rockets to an astonishing 240 km/h. And Japan recently unveiled the steepest ride, the Takabisha, with a free falling angle of 121 degrees.

So which record is the new Canadian thrill ride looking to break?

"It will be the tallest and fastest coaster in Canada," said Wonderland spokeswoman Dineen Beaven.

According to the Roller Coaster DataBase, it could also edge past the 92.96-metre Intimidator 305, in Virginia, to claim seventh tallest in the world. The Leviathan could also crack the top-10 fastest in the world, the site says.

The park has hired Bollinger & Mabillard to design its latest attraction after the Swiss firm created the Behemoth for Wonderland in 2008.

According to Coaster Enthusiasts of Canada, the Behemoth currently holds the record for tallest and fastest ride in the country. The Leviathan will tower 23.3 m over its sister coaster and travel 23 km/h faster.

Construction has already begun on the steel structure, with crews laying out its foundation. Tracks will be brought to the site in the coming weeks, Beaven said.

The $28 million Leviathan will be Wonderland's only giga-coaster, a term used to describe rides more than 91.4 metres tall, and the park's 16th in total.

Only California's Six Flags and Cedar Point, in Ohio, have more coasters, Beaven said.

"It's great to be able to rank with them," she said. "We have a really wide variety, which is what I think makes our park appealing."

I don't see that one being much of a vomit-inducing ride simply because it's more about speed and drops than it is gut-wrenching corners and loops.

The one that used to be called Top Gun and now I can't remember the new non-Paramount name gets me every time. I feel like a bag of ass coming off that one.

Years ago, Canada's Wonderland was just happy being a place with a couple decent coasters and a bunch of rides the whole family could go on while they gouged you out of your money. At least they've embraced the coaster-wars and are trying to be one of the best in the world.

Hey even some of their old school wooden roller coasters were fun to go on, if for no other reason than no one else did, so you could just stay in the coaster and the guy would just send you back through :P

Top Gun is called Flight Deck now.

Wonderland doesn't hold a torch to Cedar Point. Not even close. Even Cedar Point's older rides are better than most Wonderland rides. Behemoth is one of Wonderland's newest rides, and is very similar to Millenium force. MF came out in 2000, and Behemoth came out in 2008. MF is bigger, faster and steeper. Same thing when comparing Raptor to Top Gun/Flight Deck. Cedar point also has Top Thrill Dragster, Maverick, and a bunch more, as well as wicked thrill rides such as Skyhawk which dwarf rides like Jet Scream. The line are much shorter at Cedar Point, which lets you pack more better rides into a day. Plus Cedar Point does not rip you off financially in the park or at the gate, whereas your wallets feels empty after a day in Wonderland.

Anyway, if you're going to go to CW, you should go up to and including Halloween for the haunted park stuff. It's excellent, a lot of fun, and there are virtually no lines. Go when it's warmer though. If it's freezing you'll hate yourself.

If you're going to go to Cedar Point, go when the American kids are back in school. The lines are ridiculously short, and the park is full of Canadians.

To be fair, Paramount didn't put any emphasis on adding roller coasters at all - never mind what would be needed to keep up with other premier theme parks. The new owners had a lot of catching up to do.

Paramount took over in 1994 and added precisely one roller coaster (Top Gun/Flight Deck) that wasn't intended for kids until they built Time Warp in 2004. Paramount's ownership pretty much consisted of adding movie-themed rides, kiddie-park crap, thrill rides like Drop Zone and expanding the water park.

Yea I know. It's like Burke coming into the Leafs and trying to make them the best team in the league. They're not, but they might be under his guidance. Wonderland might be great, but right now it's being dominated by a certain park in Sandusky Ohio, home of Callahan Auto.

The good news with the park now being owned by the Cedar Point company is that it's virtually assured that the focus of the park's future will be roller coasters. Hopefully they'll be getting rid of the abundance of kids-themed stuff in the process. I wouldn't care if the water park went away, either.

I dunno about that. As a kid, the water park was actually the best part of the whole thing for me. Maybe its because the main rides weren't up to par, but whenever I went with family or friends we'd always spend most of the day there.
