One Year Until Sochi

Recommended Posts

New CBA includes declaration of intent to participate in Olympics next year. Still have to work out agreement with IIHF.

Having said that, post the roster you want to see for Team Canada (or the country of your choice).

Just threw this together. Just like in Vancouver goaltending is what gives me the most concern...

E. Staal - Crosby - Perry

Neal - Stamkos - Nash

Marleau - Getzlaf - Eberle

Toews - Bergeron - J Stall

Richards

Weber - Doughty

Seabrook - Kieth

Pietrangelo - Bieksa

Campbell

Price

Luongo

Fluery

I don't think there will be much question as to who gets thrown in net at this point. Price is the best Canadian goalie in the league right now, but yes, there seems to be an epic dropoff after Luongo.

Fleury is awful.

I'm going to forget someone, but oh well.

E. Staal - Crosby - Nash

Tavares - Stamkos - Perry

B. Richards - Toews - Giroux

Neal - J. Staal - Getzlaf

Bergeron

Eberle

Doughty - Keith

Letang - Weber

Pietrangelo - M. Staal

Bieksa

Price

Luongo

Ward

I'm sure I missed some good players.

What the hell happened to Canadian goaltending?

One of the big reasons I think the juniors haven't been able to win the prize in a few years. Feels like we always had a stud goalie in the tournament...the last few years it feels like just a bunch of guys and no big time goalies at all.

That's my biggest concern too. It use to be our strong point, but it's definitely in decline.

None of the 3 listed can compare to the likes of Patrick Roy, Ed Belfour, or Marty Brodeur.

Speaking of which....Brodeur is still playing pretty damn well. If he sticks around do you give him an invite?

I'd probably feel more comfortable with a 41 year old Brodeur in net than someone like Marc Andre Fleury.

Brodeur was awful in Vancouver.

I totally forgot about Cam Ward, would have him over Brodeur and Fluery.

I thought a lot about adding Spezza, but I can't see him playing a full time top 6 role with centres like Crosby, Eric Staal, and Stamkos already there, and I don't see him being as successful in a bottom 6 role as Bergeron, Toews, or Mike Richards.

I think the solution is obvious.

Justin "The Future" Pogge.

I was going to include Ian White. But that just wouldn't be fair to the rest of the world. ;)

Spezza is a good player, but he doesn't trump the centres Canada has already. Crosby, Toews, Thornton and Bergeron.

Tentative Olympic groups according to Bob McKenzie:

A

Czech Republic

Sweden

Switzerland

Latvia

B

Finland

Canada

Norway

Austria

C

Russia

Slovakia

USA

Slovenia

Looks like a pretty good draw for Canada, while Group C is certainly the Group of Death.

That's pretty awesome. Finland is the only one we have to worry about, Norway and Austria are worthless.

I don't think you'll see Iggy or Big Joe there. I think with the big ice (Canada's nemisis of hockey) we'll go real young with speed. After all Canada has only proven to do well on North American soil.

The worry is getting into the quarterfinal and suddenly facing much improved competition.

I think Iggy will be there because of the success he's had for Canada. I doubt he's so old now that he can't keep up with Crosby and Nash so much so that he'll drag them down.

And Jumbo Joe is on the 4th line. Great face off guy that can play ends of the rink. He's got great vision and has been to these tournaments before. He's no stranger to the big ice given his history with Canada and HC Davos.

I'm curious why Getzlaf is missing from your lineuo Jared.

The guy was pretty fucking solid last time and you know he has chemistry with Perry.

Getzlaf is a beast and he's one of my favourites. The only problem with him is that there are better people out there from our country at what he brings.

He's a scoring center that brings plenty of offence, but he's not as good as Crosby or Stamkos in this area.

He's nowhere near the two-way player Toews is, and he's not as good as Thornton is at controlling the play and I'm not sure on the stats with this, but I'm fairly confident he isn't as good on the draw as Jumbo Joe.

Great player for sure, but not good enough in any one area. Too much talent in Canada.

And the Staal brothers? No way. Overrated.

I like how you put two Bruins on Thornton's wing jared. Show those fucking Beantowners what they're missing.

Still pulling for the big man to win one!

EDIT: Thornton had a faceoff win percentage of 56% to Getzlaf's 47%

I was going to call them Beaners, but apparently that's derogatory towards Mexicans.
