NHL prospect charged with assault

By STEVE SIMMONS -- Toronto Sun

On what should be the best day of Wojtek Wolski's young life, he will dress in his finest suit, wait with anticipation and hear his name called in the first round of the NHL entry draft.
And he will hope that nothing else about him is mentioned.

Wolski, the scouts will tell you, is one of the good ones. Skilled enough to be an early choice on Saturday. A solid kid from a hard-working immigrant family.

Wojcitch Wolski -- his legal name -- was charged by Toronto police on June 8 with assault causing bodily harm after a Rosedale "party went bad" and another 18-year-old boy was beaten and hospitalized.

On Saturday, the 6-foot-2, 188-pound Wolski will pull an NHL jersey over his shirt and tie, shake hands and wear a team baseball cap. By Saturday, a teenager named Scott Ackley is hoping to have his CAT scan to determine what, if any, affects a beating he suffered will have on him in the short and long term.

It was supposed to be nothing more than a bunch of private school kids sharing two birthday parties on a long weekend night. One of them was a Havergal student, the other went to St. Michael's. But too many people showed up at the home, some of them not invited, the party got out of control and this is where the stories vary.

One father ended up with his son in the hospital. Another father ended up with his soon-to-be-millionaire son charged with a crime that if taken to Ontario's Superior Court of Justice could land his boy 10 years in prison; more likely, the case will be heard in provincial court, where the maximum sentence is 18 months.

Ackley's father, Mark, a private school teacher at Royal St. George's College, claims his son, at the request of the host, asked Wolski to leave the party and allegedly was "sucker-punched" instead by the Brampton Battalion forward. After the punch, the father said, several people beat and kicked on what police later described as an "unconscious" Ackley.

"You don't expect to go to an emergency ward at midnight and see your son all beaten up," Mark Ackley said. "He needed seven stitches under one eye, he was all swollen under the other eye and his head was all swollen. They beat the crap out of him. He wouldn't mind one guy going at him but there were 10 or 12."

Mark Ackley said he was "not interested in preventing (Wolski) from pursuing his career" but was interested in justice being done.

The Wolski camp tells a different story. He didn't initiate the fight, his lawyer, John Rosen -- of Paul Bernardo fame -- insisted yesterday.

"He was merely coming to the the assistance of his girlfriend, who was pushed off a porch," said Rosen, who will represent Wolski when he makes his first court appearance on July 20. "My client is treating this matter very seriously even though he has done nothing wrong ... He is concerned about the impact (on his hockey career) because somebody might take this out of context."

Wolski has co-operated with police on this matter and turned himself in when he was booked on June 8. Yesterday, a call to his agent was not returned. But an associate of his agent did call. Later in the day, Rosen called to make his client's side of the story known.

Some who know Wolski best were stunned to learn of the charges against him. In fact, his coach, Stan Butler, wasn't aware that Wolski had been in any incident until told by The Toronto Sun.

"If you know Wojtek, the one knock against him is his lack of aggression," Butler said. "He hasn't had a fight in two years. It's not in his nature to fight.

"He's a quality kid and I'm shocked by this."

any news on how the investigation is going? cause this kid has major potential, but if he did attack unprovoked then he deserves to be rightly punished.
